The 1° Root Cause: Why Pain Doesn’t Start Where You Feel It
If you’ve ever had pain that just wouldn’t go away—despite seeing skilled practitioners, trying all the right treatments, and doing everything “correctly”—you’re not alone.
And more importantly…
you’re not dealing with a stubborn symptom.
You’re likely dealing with the wrong location.
Because in the body, pain is often not where the problem begins.
What Is Myofascial Mappingᵀᴹ?
In Integrative Manual TherapyTM (IMTTM), we use something called Myofascial Mappingᵀᴹ.
It’s a hands-on way of listening to the body—not forcing it, not guessing—but following the actual patterns of tension through the connective tissue system.
Fascia is the web that connects everything:
- muscles
- bones
- nerves
- arteries
- organs
It’s one continuous system.
So when something gets injured, inflamed, or restricted—even years ago—it can create tension patterns that pull on completely different parts of the body.
Myofascial Mappingᵀᴹ traces those patterns back to their true origin.
The Big Idea: Structure Dictates Function
In IMTᵀᴹwe operate from a simple but powerful principle:
If something isn’t functioning right, there is a structural reason.
That structure could be:
- a muscle
- a ligament
- a nerve
- an artery
- or even an organ
When that structure is under strain, the body compensates.
Over time, those compensations become pain, tightness, or dysfunction.
Most treatments focus on the compensation.
IMTᵀᴹ goes after the cause.
My Story: 8 Months of a Calf Spasm (That Wasn’t About My Calf)
Years ago, I was running 70–90 miles a week.
Then suddenly, I developed a calf spasm that wouldn’t go away.
For 8 months, I tried everything:
- physical therapy
- stretching
- strengthening
- rest
Nothing worked.
Until I had an Integrative Manual Therapyᵀᴹ session.
Instead of treating my calf, the practitioner used Myofascial Mappingᵀᴹ to scan my body.
They followed the tension patterns… and found something unexpected:
The primary restriction wasn’t in my leg.
It traced back to my ribcage—specifically the aorta/heart region.
We worked on that area.
Next run:
30 minutes. Completely pain-free.
And the calf spasm?
It never came back.
Because we didn’t treat the symptom.
We found the 1° root cause.
What Myofascial Mappingᵀᴹ Detects
With trained hands, we can feel:
- fascial restrictions
- scar tissue
- adhesions
- inflammation
- nerve entrapments
- tissue disorganization
These often don’t show up on MRIs or X-rays—but they are very real in the body.
Why Other Treatments Sometimes Don’t Work
Most approaches—even very good ones—focus on:
- where it hurts
- what looks abnormal
- what’s common
But if the true cause is somewhere else…
You can do everything right and still not get better.
That’s not failure.
That’s misdirection.
What Happens in an IMTᵀᴹ Session
Using Myofascial Mappingᵀᴹ, we:
- Scan the body through the fascial system
- Identify the 1° root cause
- Use targeted Integrative Manual Therapyᵀᴹ techniques
- Restore function and movement
There are over 20,000 IMTᵀᴹ techniques, each specific to different tissues.
If You’ve Tried Everything…
And something still isn’t resolving…
It may not be complicated.
It may just be somewhere else.
A Different Way to Look at Healing
Instead of asking:
“What do I do for this pain?”
Ask:
“Where did this actually start?”
