Recurring Running Injuries Treatment in Bellingham, WA

When the Same Injury Keeps Coming Back… There’s Usually More to the Story.

You’re finally running again…

Then the Achilles tightens.

The hamstring grabs.

The shin starts hurting.

Your IT band flares.

Your knee aches.

So you back off.

Stretch.
Foam roll.
Strengthen.
Rest.
Maybe even complete another round of physical therapy.

Things improve…

Until they don’t.

If you’ve been caught in this frustrating cycle, you’re not alone.

One of the biggest questions runners ask is:

“Why does my injury keep coming back?”

In many cases, the painful tissue isn’t the primary problem.

Something else may be causing your body to protect itself.

That’s the focus of our work at Beyond Limits Physical Therapy.

The Big Idea: Your Body Is Trying To Protect You

One concept that has guided my work for decades is something I call the body’s Hierarchy of Protection.

Your body is incredibly intelligent.

It doesn’t usually tighten muscles, limit motion, or create painful movement patterns randomly.

Sometimes those changes are protective responses to restrictions somewhere else in the body.

Instead of asking,

“How do we stop the pain?”

I ask,

“What is your body trying to protect?”

Why Traditional Treatment Sometimes Isn’t Enough

Many runners have already tried:

  • Stretching
  • Strengthening
  • Massage
  • Foam rolling
  • Orthotics
  • Dry needling
  • Chiropractic
  • Rest
  • Ice
  • New shoes

These treatments can absolutely help.

But if the underlying driver hasn’t changed, the symptoms often return when training resumes.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the treatment failed.

It may simply mean the true source of the problem hasn’t yet been identified.

Looking Beyond The Painful Area

Over more than four decades as a physical therapist and runner, I’ve found that recurring running injuries often involve restrictions somewhere else in the body.

Sometimes those restrictions involve joints.

Sometimes connective tissue.

Sometimes movement patterns.

Sometimes areas much farther away than runners would expect.

That’s why every runner receives a whole-body evaluation instead of treatment focused only on the painful area.

Frequently Asked Questions About Recurring Running Injuries

Why do my running injuries keep coming back?

Many recurring injuries occur because the painful tissue isn’t the only structure involved. Restrictions elsewhere in the body may continue placing extra stress on the injured area every time you run.

Can you help if I’ve already tried physical therapy?

Yes. Many runners who come to Beyond Limits Physical Therapy have already tried traditional physical therapy, massage, chiropractic care, injections, or extended rest. Our evaluation looks for contributing factors that may not have been previously addressed.

Do I have to stop running?

Not necessarily. Depending on your symptoms and goals, many runners are able to continue training while addressing the underlying movement restrictions contributing to their injury.

Do you work with competitive runners?

Absolutely. We work with middle school athletes, high school runners, collegiate athletes, marathoners, trail runners, ultrarunners, and runners who simply want to enjoy pain-free movement again.
