When we think of a hamstring tear or strain usually we think of the sprinter or football wide receiver who is sprinting full speed and suddenly grabs his hamstring.

But even distance runners and other athletes can have a tightness and pain in the hamstring area, the back of the upper leg.

This can be a chronic pain that limits runners and walkers.

Usually doctors and other practitioners will say it takes 6 to 8 weeks of rest to heal from a full blown hamstring injury. But we’ve found a way to heal faster and also heal the root causes, so that it doesn’t reoccur.

The idea is something called Double Crush. This is an Integrative Physical Therapy term which means the nerve is impinged at 2 or more areas and this can be a cause of hamstring muscles spasming and even tearing.

The hamstring muscles are spasming to protect an impingement on the nerve.

So for hamstrings we think lumbar and sacral nerves, sciatic nerve, femoral nerves, tibial and peroneal nerves.

There can be impingements along the tracts of these nerves. So while simply resting the muscle can help take symptoms away for awhile, if the nerve is still impinged the runner or athlete is still at risk from re-injury.

And the nerves can be impinged because of bone bruising and disruptions in the arteries and veins that run alongside the nerves.

Sounds daunting right! The key is to find what the root cause is and clear and heal that. Then the body doesn’t have to spasm or protect the nerve and muscles.

With Myofascial Mapping, I can identify these root causes and do specific healing to the primary cause, so the athlete can heal naturally.
