How to balance the sacroiliac joints with a simple home exercise. *
The sacroiliac joint is a large joint; one on the right and one on the left side of the lower pelvis area where the sacrum bone connects to the large ilium bones. Balance and mobility in these joints are useful so you can walk and bend and sit with ease and grace.
When the sacroiliac joints are locked up the whole side of the pelvis is affected with a stiffness that shows up in painful and difficult walking and moving.
This exercise is a home program exercise I learned from John Iams, PT of PRRT. Here’s how you do it.
1. lying on your back on a bed or floor, think of lengthening one leg as if someone is pulling it long ways away from your hip. then very slowly and gently allow your leg to lengthen. Do this so slowly that someone else in the room would not be able to see you move. It should take about 30 to 60 seconds.
then
2. Do the same lengthening thing with the other leg; again taking 30 to 60 seconds to lengthen it.
3. Slowly return the legs to the starting position. The entire movement right and left should take at least one minute or more. So do it very slowly.
Then re-test how you feel. Walk around, move from sit to stand. Feel how you feel and notice what you notice. You can do this once a day to regain mobility and balance and ease in your hips, pelvis and lower back.
Let me know what you all notice. If you’ve taken the time to do this, you already show that you care about your body and how it moves. You already do this now.
You might want to use this exercise as part of your daily routine and if you might like more information on it or might like an individual session of one-on-one physical, integrative and manual therapy let me know.
