When someone falls, it can be jarring both physically and emotionally. And there is sometimes the thought of “is there something I’m missing here”, such as “am I on the right path?” With Integrative Manual Therapy there are some ideas around what happens after a fall and home program / self-treatment techniques that can help with these issues and questions.
With a fall or a trauma of any kind including car accidents there is a phenomena that we’ve picked up on with our Integrative Manual Therapy approach. I saw a video once of a skateboarder who was on one of those half pike tubes doing his skateboarding back and forth. He was getting quite high with each round thru the half pike. Then he lifted way above the floor and it was apparent he would come down flat on his back. What happened next illustrates a phenomena of a descended sacrum. When he hit on his back, his shoes came flying off his feet! Many times in car accidents, people’s shoes fly off as well. During a fall there is also a force that travels thru the body and out the feet as well. In fact any time there is a direct trauma to the body, and especially the back or head the force travels thru the spine and into the feet; out of the feet.
When this occurs, the sacrum; the low part of the spine gets jammed downward. This causes a pull or traction on the spinal cord and results in nerve tension throughout the body. Also with such a big hit or fall, the body goes into some shock and the adrenals kick in. People can feel uneasy after a fall; anxious.
There is a simple technique; a home program self treatment thing that one can use to fix this up. Neurofascial Process (NFP) is a tech of Sharon Giammatteo, PT, PhD of centerIMT where by the client places his or her own hands on two specific spots and keeps them in contact with their body for 20 minutes or more. (15 minutes is the minimum time to use)
To do the NFP tech:
Place one hand on your forehead or the top of your head.
Place the other hand on the sacrum; the lowest part of the back; not the small of the back but lower down just above the tailbone. Leave your hands there for 20 minutes and repeat a few times a day for a few days. You may notice some pulsing and movements in you body and spine. This is your body going thru a reflexive unwinding; a healing mode. This tech is also useful to help with shifting some of the path and purpose issues of why you may have fallen. You may get some epiphanies of what it was all about.
