Get Treatment Early!

I have been practicing physical therapy for 7 years. One of the biggest recommendations I have for people who are having physical pain is this: GET HELP EARLY! Treating an acute injury is so much more effective, and recovery is much quicker. Many of us feel pain, and assume, “It will get better! My body always has.” This may very well be the case, but it may take a very long time. This may mean a long time of you being limited in your activities, and feeling uncomfortable! No pain is too small, and I believe it is very worth it to get it addressed earlier than later.

I am currently part of a wonderful practice that treats a large majority of chronic pain patients. We are fortunate to have very skilled therapists, and our techniques and patient education are very effective for this population. However, I find myself often thinking, “If only this person had sought out help and treatment many months/years ago! Then this process wouldn’t be taking so long, and he or she would have had his/her life back to normal a long time ago!”

In encourage you to call your doctor even if you are having the least bit of pain that seems to be lingering longer than it should. In many cases you don’t even have to go in to see your doctor! He or she may be able to refer you directly to PT, or better yet in many states (California is one) you can go directly to a Physical Therapist for an evaluation. You will thank yourself in the long run!
